Handicapped people

The handicapped people have been one of the most disadvantaged groups at all times. They suffered the collapse of the social protection systems and are among those with poorest standard of life. Despite protective laws in many countries, in reality most handicapped persons have very limited access to propereducation, job or even to public transport or public buildings. Supported to some extent by state institutions in assuring the basic existence, the handicapped have little support in their desperate desire to be a real part of the society.

While civil society increased its power and various organizations working with disabled and handicapped people are emerging, still those very vulnerable people are far from being perceived as equals by the majority. Their dignity and self-respect is affected, they are hindered from communication with others, forgotten, often invisible people.

But ... they are fighters. They have to fight every day, every minute and put enormous energy to do things that we, the others consider simple and put lttle or no effort in. They have to fight to go upstairs, to find their way to the public transport, private or public building, cover their physical needs, develop their own ways to communicate, to provide for themselves.

They can overcome conditions impossible for most of us. And they can do amazing things that the rest of us cannot. The blind can hear and feel other people much better then the rest of us, the deaf can seetimes better then we can, many can control their bodies much better then the rest of us. They can feel the pain of others much better as they feel it too. And they do not want to be alone.

A little self-confidence brings more self-respect, and doing things with the other people returns the feeling of being a living part of society. This is the basis of our work.
